03/09/2010 - Montreal, QC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mathieu Darche scored a pair of goals to help the Montreal Canadiens defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-3, at the Bell Centre.
Scott Gomez had a goal and two assists for the Canadiens, who have won three in a row. Glen Metropolit and Benoit Pouliot also scored for Montreal, which got 28 saves from Jaroslav Halak.
Steven Stamkos scored a goal and dished out an assist for the Lightning, who have dropped six of seven. Martin St. Louis and Matt Walker also lit the lamp in defeat.
Antero Niittymaki gave up four goals on 13 shots before being pulled near the midway point of the second. Mike Smith turned aside 14-of-15 shots in relief.
Montreal got on the board with a power-play goal at the 2:50 mark of the first period. Gomez charged down the left side of the ice and made his way behind the net. He then slid a pass in front to Metropolit, whose snap shot beat Niittymaki.
Gomez fired a wrister through the pads of Niittymaki at the 12:02 mark to make it a 2-0 game.
Tampa Bay got a power-play goal from Stamkos at the 3:47 mark of the second to cut the gap to one. The Canadiens tried to clear a rebound from in front of their own net. However, the clearing attempt went right to Stamkos, who fired home a wrister from the left circle.
Less than a minute later, Pouliot made it a two-goal contest again. Montreal then went up 4-1 on Darche's goal at the 7:33 mark. Metropolit, who was positioned along the right boards, slid a pass in front for a charging Darche, who completed the play with a tip-in.
Walker's first goal of the season cut the deficit to 4-2 at the midway point of the middle stanza. Walker took a bouncing pass from Mark Parrish and fired a shot past Halak from the top of the right circle.
Darche scored 3:26 into the third to give the Canadiens a 5-2 lead. St. Louis lit the lamp with 1:07 remaining to account for the final margin.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
