D'backs down Nats behind Young, Hudson

Baseball Betting Lines

04/06/2007 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Young knocked in a pair of runs and Orlando Hudson homered and scored twice as Arizona held on for a 4-3 win over Washington in the opener of a four-game set.

Edgar Gonzalez (1-0) carried the momentum generated from his strong spring training into the regular season for the Diamondbacks, giving up seven hits and two runs through five innings of work. He also struck out seven while walking just two.

"(Gonzalez) picked up where he left off in spring training," said Arizona manager Bob Melvin. "It was good that he got the win for us tonight."

The win did come at a cost for Arizona, as outfielder Scott Hairston left the game in the first inning when he fouled a ball off his left leg.

Dmitri Young hit his first home run of the season and Brian Schneider went 2- for-4 with an RBI for the Nationals.

Washington starter Jason Bergmann (0-1) had a rough outing, yielding five hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings, walking six batters while striking out just one.

Trailing 4-0 after three innings, the Nationals gradually chipped away at the lead to pull within a run.

Washington got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Ryan Church led off with a double, moved to third on Ronnie Belliard's groundout and scored on Micah Bowie's groundout to second.

Dmitri Young's two-out, solo shot in the fifth made it 4-2 and Schneider grounded into a fielder's choice in the seventh, scoring Austin Kearns to bring Washington within a run.

However, that was all for the Nationals as Arizona held on for the win. Brandon Lyon worked around a two-out double in the eighth and Jose Valverde set the side down in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Bergmann struggled with his command from the start of the game as Arizona struck for three runs in the opening frame.

After Eric Byrnes led off the game with a single and stole second, Bergmann got Alberto Callaspo to pop out but then issued back-to-back walks to Hudson and Chad Tracy to load the bases.

Hairston then got hurt in his at-bat and Robby Hammock took over and popped out to second baseman. Bergmann, though, then walked Conor Jackson to force in a run. Chris Young followed with a single to left field that chased home two more runs and made it 3-0.

Hudson's leadoff homer to start the fourth handed Arizona a four-run advantage as Washington rallied to make it close.

Game Notes

Washington won the five of the six matchups with Arizona last season, including a perfect 3-0 record at home...The Nationals' bullpen combined to toss 5 1/3 innings of one-hit ball.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
