05/11/2010 - Madrid, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - World No. 1 superstar Roger Federer and surging Spaniard Fernando Verdasco were a pair of second-round winners Tuesday at the $3.6 million Madrid Open, a clay-court French Open tune-up.

The top-seeded Federer got past German Benjamin Becker 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), while a sixth-seeded Verdasco topped 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at the Magic Box.

Federer beat Becker in 1 hour, 21 minutes without facing even one break-point on Day 3. Verdasco withstood 11 aces from the massive-serving Karlovic and prevailed in 1 hour, 39 minutes. The one-dimensional Karlovic was unable to break the recent Barcelona champion and Monte Carlo Masters runner-up Verdasco's serve on Tuesday.

The 16-time major champion Federer was stunned by Spaniard Albert Montanes in a semifinal in Estoril last week.

Federer is the reigning Madrid champion, having upset former top-ranked Spanish hero and 2005 titlist Rafael Nadal in last year's finale here. Federer also titled here in 2006 and was the runner-up in 2007.

Last week's Munich champion Mikhail Youzhny stayed red hot, while last week's surprise Belgrade runner-up John Isner also advanced with a first-round win on Tuesday. The 10th-seeded Russian Youzhny overcame Slovak Lukasz Lacko 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, while a 13th-seeded 6-foot-9 Isner, of the United States, fought back to beat diminutive Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Last week's Belgrade champion, Sam Querrey, went by way of the first-round upset Tuesday, as the 14th-seeded American gave way to Spanish qualifier Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-5. Munoz-De La Nava staved off a match point en route to ousting his 6-foot-6 counterpart.

Two other seeds avoided first-round exits, as No. 15 Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka topped Spanish wild card Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-4 and No. 16 Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci bounced Spaniard Pere Riba 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Additional first-round wins came for Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, German Philipp Petzschner, Latvian Ernests Gulbis, Argentines Eduardo Schwank and qualifier Juan Ignacio Chela, Romanian Victor Hanescu, and Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis. Chela will face 2008 Madrid champion and 2010 Aussie Open runner-up Andy Murray here on Wednesday.

A quality first-round match was supposed to pit 11th-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych against Argentine and former Madrid champion David Nalbandian, but both players pulled out of the draw on Tuesday, sending American lucky-losers Mardy Fish and Michael Russell into the draw. Berdych pulled out with a right hip injury, while the oft-injured former top-10 star Nalbandian, who titled here in 2007, left the field due to a hamstring problem.
